deafREVIEW Monthly Showcase

Salon of Shame (International District)
I don’t head out to the Theatre often, but when I hear that Salon of Shame is hosting a reading, I do everything possible to make it.
Held bi-monthly, Salon of Shame is equivalent to an Open Mic night with a twist. The requirement? Read a story that has been written by you, when you were a teenager that is plenty shameful! Every topic from your first crush to how much you hated your parents is acceptable and encouraged. Readings are held at Theatre off Jackson in International District where every event has sold out since its’ inception!  What makes this event deaf-friendly? The fact that they have been providing American Sign Language Interpreters since 2007, long before their large following of deaf/hh patrons started attending. Not only do they provide interpreters to all of their events, they have added a section in their theatre for deaf/hh and their guests as well as access to on-line ticket purchasing.
If you haven’t made it to your first Salon of Shame reading, I highly encourage you get some friends together and go. I promise you will LOL (laugh out loud) and never look at your high school diaries the same again. For a sneak peek of what you might be getting yourself into, see Ahmad and his Breakup Letter. Tickets go on sale three weeks prior to the reading date and sell out very fast, so plan ahead by visiting the online box office.
