July 2012 - Letter from the Editor

I always love June – here in Seattle, it’s when my summer vacation begins, hopefully, the sun comes out (which is a chancy proposition in Seattle at best), but rain or no rain, we know how to celebrate summer.  Jason Tang sent some pictures along from the Summer Solistice parade, which is always cheerful, colorful and funky.  I also have a special treat this month – pictures of Pride from New York City. Anne took some great photos of the parade which showcased the unique artichecture in New York City.  In addition, we had our second Epic Jam – ASL poetry night. With that, I will debut my first short video about the poetry jam (go easy – I’m just an amateur!). Buddy Elledge also led the first ASL Art walk, which was quite a success – check out the lovely pieces the group saw on their tour.  Joshua Jones submitted yet another mouth-watering restaurant review (I always end up feeling hungry after I edit his review!).  deafREVIEW has submitted an review of the Salon of Shame – which is NOT to be missed, and I can say that with the full authority of Deaf Spotlight behind me! I also had an unique opportunity come up where I was able to interview an emerging writer, the locally based Ellie Savidge. We had a lovely conversation about art, life and writing. It was a pleasure to meet with her. Last, but not least is the TADA performance line up – this time, I’m posting a little ahead, so you can go get those tickets for August!!  Remember to check out the Deaf Street Style photo on the right, along with a lovely rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner" by Terrylene. Now, it's the time to get ready for the fireworks!

Rain, sun, or snow - share with us your artistic endeavors – photos, photos of artwork, poetry, videos, and whatnot. I’m thrilled to hear from you and have the opportunity to share with everybody your talent.  Please remember to contact me if you are interested in submitting something - we want the opportunity to showcase the talent out there in the Pacific Northwest. Please email us with the required information - your name, contact info, city/state, attachment of your work with a title, and a website if you have one at whatsup@deafspotlight.com. We will screen and select for the upcoming month's online edition. The deadline is July 25th, if you wish to submit something to the July edition. We look forward seeing your creative work from the Deaf community of the Pacific Northwest!

See you next month,
Katie Roberts
