August 2012 Letter from the Editor

July has been an exciting month, with so many things happening.  What’s Up format will be changed this month. We are going to be releasing articles one day at a time, starting today and on the 15th of the month. Every article should have a full day to shine in the sun! You will be treated to lovely pictures of body painting alongside the monthly deafREVIEW of the Oregon Shakespeare festival, and Buddy shares with us in a vlog about the upcoming performance of Rent.  I am also sharing with you some lovely selections from the ASL Art Walk, and I certainly hope you will be coming this week!

For the second half of this month, we certainly have a lot more planned.  We had some terrific events, and we will be able to read about the art of origami, as well as another mouth-watering restaurant review from Joshua Jones. He chose to review a taco truck – a delicious departure from his usual fare!  Patty’s article about the Silent Movie night absolutely made me regret my decision not to attend the movie that night – there are so many opportunities out there – how could I not say yes to them all?  In addition, I thought I’d have some fun posting this music video has been making the rounds on Facebook - “Somebody I Used to Know”.  This video was composed by a Deaf and CODA team, and it’s of the best quality! Enjoy.

The creative juices should be flowing in this lovely weather - contact me if you are interested in submitting something - we want the opportunity to showcase the talent out there in the Pacific Northwest. Please email us with the required information - your name, contact info, city/state, attachment of your work with a title, and a website if you have one at whatsup@deafspotlight.com. We will screen and select for the upcoming month's online edition. The deadline is August 25th, if you wish to submit something to the September edition. We look forward seeing your creative work from the Deaf community of the Pacific Northwest!

See you next month,
Katie Roberts
