Seattle’s Best Gyro with a slice of deaf-friendliness = Mr. Gyros

If you find yourself in the Ballard or Greenwood area and with an appetite, do yourself and your tummy a favor and stop at Mr. Gyros for Seattle’s Best Gyro (Seattle Magazine, 2010).  Not only are their gyros to die for, their positive and upbeat attitude make this a very deaf-friendly establishment.  The owners Sammy and Joni, whom are also brothers, have been serving up gyros since 2002 and there are two Seattle locations to choose from. I was first introduced to their mouth-watering food by a Sign Language Interpreter in the area and before I knew it, all of my deaf neighbors were eating there too! They’ve obviously had a lot of experience with deaf and hard of hearing customers, no matter your communication need. While it doesn’t appear they know any Sign Language, they have many positive “deaf-friendly” strategies down such as good eye contact, clear speech, patience and a positive attitude! They seem to “get” that when communicating with deaf and hard of hearing individuals, there is no cookie cutter approach. They remain open and flexible to a variety of communication needs.

You know when you find a good thing, you want to tell all of your friends about it? That’s exactly what inspired this post and I hope you will take my advice and visit this deaf-friendly business that’s guaranteed to make your mouth water and your experience a deaf-friendly one. deafREVIEW is a community-led search and review website for the deaf, deaf-blind and hard of hearing community which was launched in its flagship city of Seattle, Washington in March 2012. Now, deaf, deaf-blind and hard of hearing members and their allies -- such as family members, friends, and advocates -- can rate, write and read reviews about the deaf-friendliness of businesses they frequent. From restaurants to doctors' office, they can give their two cents (or five stars) as they explore the question: "Is this business deaf-friendly? Why or why not?". Future deafREVIEW launches are scheduled in 2012 for cities such as San Francisco, Los Angeles, Austin, New York City, Rochester, Washington DC and many more!  Check us out on Facebook or Twitter.

Unique Feature: deafREVIEW is deaf-owned and operated!
