If you find yourself in the Ballard or Greenwood area and with an appetite, do yourself and your tummy a favor and stop at Mr. Gyros for Seattle ’s Best Gyro (Seattle Magazine, 2010). Not only are their gyros to die for, their positive and upbeat attitude make this a very deaf-friendly establishment. The owners Sammy and Joni, whom are also brothers, have been serving up gyros since 2002 and there are two Seattle locations to choose from. I was first introduced to their mouth-watering food by a Sign Language Interpreter in the area and before I knew it, all of my deaf neighbors were eating there too! They’ve obviously had a lot of experience with deaf and hard of hearing customers, no matter your communication need. While it doesn’t appear they know any Sign Language, they have many positive “deaf-friendly” strategies down such as good eye contact, clear speech, patience and a positive attitude! They seem to “get” that when communicating with deaf and hard of hearing individuals, there is no cookie cutter approach. They remain open and flexible to a variety of communication needs.
