Restaurant Review: Where Ya At Matt?

Joshua Jones

If you want to try something different than your run-of-the-mill taco truck, you might want to try the Where Ya At Matt? food truck.

This is a food truck that specializes in Po Boy sandwiches and traditional New Orleans and creole fare.   Matt has a lot of passion about food and he wanted to share it with people by driving around his food truck in Seattle area.  Each day of the week it will be at a different location. This time I went to his food truck in Belltown which was on Monday.  I was craving for some New Orleans food at that time.  I ordered three different meals to try their New Orleans dishes and had I had mixed experiences. Let’s start with the first one out of three dishes I tried:

I had the Po’Boy Fried Shrimp sandwich.  Lettuce, tomato, Mama Lil's Pickled Peppers and house-made aioli came with the sandwich.  I have to say I am really disappointed because the fried shrimp didn't have any seasoning on it.  It tasted bland.  I was so looking forward to eating a Po Boy fried shrimp sandwich because it is one of my favorite New Orleans dishes.  Otherwise, I think their house-made aioli tasted really great with the shrimp, but it would taste ten times better only if they had added some seasoning on the fried shrimp.

For the second dish, I had gumbo which is made with tomatoes and thickened with okra with chicken and house-made Andouille sausage.  I have to admit that was the best gumbo I ever had.  I couldn't stop eating once I had the first bite of this dish.  The flavors of this dish were well balanced. It is also a spicy dish, but I didn't let that stop me from enjoying my meal.  If you want to experience real New Orleans gumbo then this dish is for you!

Lastly, I had red beans and rice.  I love the way they cooked both red beans and rice.  It is s very well seasoned dish and I was able to enjoy eating this dish.  It was also a little spicy as well.

I consider Where Ya At Matt? a very decent food truck compared to some food trucks.  I would give Where Ya At Matt? a three and half stars.  If they improve their fried shrimps then it would raise the score dramatically.  I would love to come back and try their different dishes and try again their po’boy sandwich with different fillings such as oysters or catfish.  Of course, I would order their delicious gumbo again!  If you want to know where they park daily, you have to go to their website to find out which day they park at a location near you.
