Spotlight Studio: Student's Perspective

Loren Ashton

Deaf Spotlight’s featured art teacher was the gifted artist, Jena Floyd of Jena Floyd Illustration! A total of 6 students showed up, and brought our drawing pads as well as pencils, colored pencils, and rulers.

2Draw Wiki provides an useful guide to drawing in perception.

Topic of this art class: learning the drawing steps for “one-point perspective.”  We drew the railroad tracks—and understood the meaning of the vanishing point! She taught us few vocabulary words based on perpendicular point view drawings: top-view, bird-view, ground-view, linear perception, and distance perception.

We learned about ancient drawings such as Jesus' Last Supper by Leondardo Da Vinci—how the room in the background showed 3D illustrations. See the photograph of a railroad tracks.  As the railroad tracks go on, the lines moving away from us comes together at a vanishing point—in the middle of the picture. We also picked up what 3D views meant!  We also learned how to draw persons in the pictures and how far they seemed to stand—distance-wise.

Jena's class was challenging and fun! All levels of art skills were welcome-- We all got to share our views on art; what inspired us to pick up a pencil and grab a sketchbook! Great rapport in the class! Easy way to make new friends. I’ll definitely be back!
